In Caroline Co., Va. & resided there in 1818 aged about 80 years [PAGE ONE] Virginia Jesse Jones of [blank] in the state of Virginia who was a private in the regiment commanded by Colonel Campbell of the Virginia line, for the term of three years. Inscribed on the Roll of Virginia at the rate of 8 Dollars per month to commence the 14 of April 1818. Certificate of Pension issued the 12 of Feb 18 - and sent to the Hon. Robt. S. Garnett, House of Representatives. Arrears to the 4th of Sept 1818 - 4 xx $37.- - 48 - $85.59 Revolutionary claim Act 18th March 1818 [PAGE TWO - this is a filled out form & of a much later period - not dated] Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions, Washington, D.C. In reply to your request - for a statement of the military history of Jesse Jones, a soldier of the Revolutionary War: Date of Enlistment: 1777 (this is has been struck through) 1778 Legenth of Service: 3 yrs Rank: Pvt Capt: H. Garnett Colonel: Campbell State: Va Battles engaged in: Monmouth, Guilford, Eutsaw? Springs Residence of soldier at time of enlistment: Caroline Co., Va. Date of application for pension: Apr 14, 1818 - residence was above Residence at date of application: Caroline Co., Va. Age at date of application: about 80 years old Remarks: Soldier had a wife living in 1820, her name is not stated nor is there any other data as to his family on file. The above noted is the only Jesse Jones of Va. found on the Rev. War records of this bureau. Could not have enlisted in 1777. If he only served 3 years and was at Eutaw Springs- Sept 1781. He could not have been at White Plains at all. His officers are not in 2nd or 3rd Va Regt. Line. [PAGE THREE] District of Virginia On this 8th day of feby 1819, before me the subscriber, one of the --- of the Court of Caroline County, personally appeared Jesse Jones aged [blank] resident in [blank] the said district who being by me first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress, entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war: "That he the said Jesse Jones enlisted for the term of three years on the [blank] day of [blank] in the year 1777 or 1778 in same county in the state of Virga. In the company commanded by Captain H. Garnett of the regiment commanded by Colonel Campbell in the line of the State of Virginia on the Continental Establishment; that he continued to serve in the said corps or in the service of the United States until the end of their term when he was discharged from service at Richmond state of Virga. That he was in the battles of Monmouth & afterwards the Battles of Eutaw Spring & Gilford Courthouse to the south. And that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services. Sworn to and declared before the court the day and year aforesaid. Jesse "X" Jones Caroline February Court 1819. The Court doth certify that it appears to their satisfaction that the said Jesse Jones did serve in the revolutionary war, as stated in the preceding declaration against the common enemy for the term of nine months at one time, on the continental establishment; and now transmit the proceedings and testimony taken and had before them to the secretary for the Department of War, pursuant to the directions of the aforementioned act of Congress. On this tenth day of July 1820 personally appeared in open court, being a court of record for the county aforesaid, Jesse Jones, aged about eighty two years, resident in the said county, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows: Under Colo Campbell in the 2nd & part of the time in the 3rd Virga. Regiment was in the battles of Monmouth & White Plains as stated in his declaration of the 8th day of Feby 1819 in which he received a pension Certificate No. [blank]. And I do solemnly swear, that I was a resident of the United States, on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time, by gift, sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof, within an intent thereby, so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress, entitled, "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War," passed on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not, nor has any other person in trust for me, any property or securities, contracts or debts due to me, nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed. No property of any kind except beding & clothes - No family but one female his wife. Sworn to and declared on the tenth day of July 1820 before the court of the county aforesaid. Pendleton, clerk of the county of Caroline state of Virginia do hereby certify that the foregoing oath and the schedule thereto annexed, are truly copied from the record of the said court; and I do further certify that it is the opinion of the said court that the total amount in value of the property exhibited in the aforesaid schedule is nothing.
