WILL OF JOHN WHITE, 1820 Found at the Caroline County Court House Caroline Wills and Deeds 1794-1863, pp. 14-16 In the name of God Amen I John White of the County of Caroline being in health of body and perfect mind & memory do constitute this my last Will and Testament after paying my just debts & C. Imprimis. I lend to my well beloved wife Nancy White during her life if she continues my widow all my Lands the Plantation I now live on called Pleasant Green situate in the County aforesaid and lying on Pamunky River (commonly called the North River) being the Land I purchased of Mr. Paul Woolfolk also a Tract adjoining the above that I purchased of Mr. Richard Wyeld & the negroes hereafter named (to Wit) Will Hanna Garland Daphney Edmund Sam Dick little Sam Tom Ralph Celia Julia Billy Betsy Amelia Jeremiah Lucinda and all my household and Kitchen furniture Stocks of all kinds plantation utensels & c. with this provise if the said Nancy White my wife should marry again she must abide by the Law. Item I give to my daughter Martha Garland White of the above named negroes Ralph Julia Betsy and little Sam one horse and saddle one Bed and furniture two cows and calves two Ews & Lambs Item I give to my son Nelson Harris White the Tract of Land I purchased of Mr. Richard Wyett adjoining the lands I now live on containing One hundred and ninety acres & 3/4 of one acre and the following negros (to Wit) Garland Daphney Edmund Sam Lucinda and Tom on horse and saddle one Bed and furniture two cows and calves two Ews and Lambs. Item I give to my son Peter Ellett the Tract of Land I now live on which I purchased of Mr. Paul Woolfolk called Pleasant Green containing by a late survey three hundred and seventy five acres and a half and the following negroes (to Wit) Will Hannah Billy Celia Amelia Jeremiah one horse and saddle one Bed and furniture two cows and calves two Ews and Lambs (Note) the above mentioned Legacies are not and Stock are not to be taken or drawn from their mother during her Widowhood without her free concert. If either of the above mentioned children Martha Garland White Nelson Harris White or Peter Ellett White should die without lawful Issue and under age then the negroes of the deceased child to be divided betixt the survivers but if one of my sons die under age then the surviving Brother is sole heir to his ___ tract of Land. Item I give to the Orphans of my eldest daughter Sally Page deceased one negroe girl by name Eve which they have now in possession also one Bed and furniture which they have received. Item I give to Caroline Hill my daughter one negroe woman by name Angeler also one Bed and furniture which she has received Item I lend to my daughter Polley Bendal during her life two small tracts of land which she now lives on containing Sixty three acres which I purchased of Mr Thomas Butler also a negro woman by name Isbel one Bed and furniture one cow and calf and other household Goods which she has received and after her death be equally divided among the lawful heirs of her body. Note the three people I now shall name not mentioned above (to Wit) George Ransom and Lorena are to be divided equally betwixt the heirs of my daughter Sally Page deceased and the heirs of my daughter Caroline Hill. N.B. The stock and furniture lent my wife and Plantation utensils as mentioned above if any remaining at her death to be equally divided betwixed my three youngest children I desire and appoint Messers Samuel Coleman Mickelberry Young James Daniel and Horace White should act as executors to this my last will and Testament Given under my hand and seal this 16th day of January 1813. White Richard Wrilcherson A codicil to the within will and so constitute a part thereof Item My man Ralph given to my daughter Martha G. White now Doget I revoke the said bequest and give him my said man Ralph to my son Peter E. White after the death of his mother. Item My lad William given to my son Peter E. White I now revoke the said bequest and give him the said William to my daughter Martha G. Doget after the death of her mother. Item The increase of my female slaves I desire may decend with their mothers to such of my children and grand as are within mentioned except my girl Lorena which is now in the possession of James Bendal which said slave Susana I desire may go as is directed in the within Will. Item My Lands within mentioned I desire may be to those that I have mentioned within and to be to them their and each of their heirs and assigns forever Item, there is one blot or erasure in the within in the ninth line and between the words Jeremiah and Lucinda. Lastly.
