Obituary of Mrs. Stephen Bell, 1932 - Carroll Co. VA

MRS. STEPHEN BELL

Farmington, Missouri News of Friday, February 12, 1932

Mrs. Stephen Bell, who had resided at Doe Run for the past ten years, died at her home Tuesday, 
following an illness of several months with a complication of diseases. She was 77 years and 
one month of age. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at two o'clock at the Doe Run 
Methodist Church, the service conducted by the pastor, Rev. J.L. Finley. Internment was in the 
Bonne Terre Cemetery.

Josephine Lyons was born in Carroll County, Virginia, Jan.19, 1855 and was married to Stephen 
Bell at the age of 24 years. Mr. and Mrs. Bell came to this state in 1882 and settled in Bonne 
Terre, becoming a pioneer family in the Lead Belt. They lived for a time in Leadwood, in Elvins 
and in Flat River. Mrs. Bell was a charter member of the Bonne Terre Methodist Church, 
maintaining her membership in that church until the time of her death. 

Mr. and Mrs. Bell became the parents of seven children, four of whom preceded the mother in 
death. The surviving children are W.E. Bell, of St. Louis, W.L. Bell, of Doe Run, and Mrs. H.H.
Bryan, of Bonne Terre. She is survived by her husband, sixteen grandchildren and eight great 
grand children.

(Submitter note: the 1850 census contains an entry for Josephine Lyons  and gives her age as 1 
year, which would make her year of birth 1849, not 1855 as per the obit article.)
