Obituary of Lucy Ann McMillian Harrold, 1937 - Carroll Co. VA

Lucy Ann McMillian Harrold, age 64, died on Saturday, January 23, 1937, in 
Mt. Airy, North Carolina, at the home of William Arthur Thomas and Elsie 
Earnestine [McMillian] Thomas, where she was visiting. Lucy was born Friday, 
November 8, 1872, in Carroll County, Virginia, the daughter of John W. 
McMillian and Martha Agnes [Guynn] McMillian. Her grandparents were William 
A. McMillian and Sarah Ann (Annie) [Allen] McMillian, James Guynn and 
Catherine McMillian; great grandparents: Stephen McMillian and Martha 
Blansett, John Guynn and Agnes McMillian; gg-grandparents Nathaniel and Anna 
McMillian and Abraham and Elizabeth McMillian.

At the age of 21, Lucy was married to Walter Booker Harrold, age 22, on 
Wednesday, February 7, 1894 in Carroll County, Virginia. He survives, the son 
of Enos Sylvester Harrold and Evalina [Allen] Harrold and grandson of Elijah 
Harrold and Catherine Scott and of Robert Allen and Elvira Dean.   

She is survived by four daughters: Claudia [Harrold] Dawson (widow of Arthur 
Samuel Dawson, who died August 19, 1933, buried Harrold Cemetery in Carroll 
County), Luzena {Harrold] Dawson (and husband Claude Jack Dawson), Annie 
Marie [Harrold] Allen (and husband Foy Dexter (Deck) Allen); Gertie [Harrold] 
Edwards (and husband Robert Lee Edwards, son of Warren Edwards and Laura 
Teague); brothers: Monroe Sanders McMillian, Humphrey Marshall McMillian (and 
wife Nancy Elizabeth Bowman), George Washington McMillian (and wife Laura 
Semones; he first married Mary Harriett Bowman, who died in 1913.), Jeremiah 
McMillian, James William McMillian; sisters: Valeria [McMillian] Young (whose 
husband died in 1918), Mary Etta [McMillian] Utt (and husband the Rev. John 
Utt), Sarah (Sis) [McMillian] Weddle, Susan Ethel [McMillian] Ayers, and 
Louella Clementine [McMillian] Coulson; brother-in-law Robert Sylvester 
Harrold (and wife Ulrica Rica [McMillian] Harrold, Joseph Elijah Harrold (and 
wife Matilda Elizabeth [Ayers] Harrold; and sisters-in-law Mary Bell [Barnes] 
Harrold (widow of Wesley David Harrold/Harrell, and Elizabeth Vipperman (wife 
of Thomas C. Harrold).

She was preceded in death by son: Howard Woodrow Harrold, buried in the 
Harrold cemetery in Carroll County; daughter Leona [Harrold] Allen, wife of 
Taylor Allen (son of Houston and Laura Allen), buried Oak Grove Baptist 
Church Cemetery; sisters: Mally Matilda McMillian, and one child who died in 
infancy; brothers- in-law Wesley David Harrold/Harrell and Thomas C. Harrold.

Lucy Harrold live a good life and will be remembered by her many relatives 
and friends.

After funeral services, she will be buried in the beautiful Oak Grove Baptist 
Church Cemetery at Cana, in southern Carroll County, Virginia, the resting 
place of many members of the McMillian, Harrold, Gwynn, and Ayers families.
