Obituary of Joseph Elijah Harrold, 1973 - Carroll Co. VA Joseph Elijah Harrold, age 92, died Friday, August 17, 1973, in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, after an extended illness. He was born Monday, May 23, 1881 in Carroll County, Virginia, the son of Enos Sylvester Harrold and Evalina [Allen] Harrold; grandson of Elijah Harrold and Catherine Scott and of Robert Allen and Elvira Dean; great grandson of Carr Allen and Temperance Daniel, John Scott and Affirah Ayers, and Henry Harrison Dean, Jr. and Keturah Ayers; gg-grandson of William Allen, Jr. and Ann Stuart, Nehemiah Daniel and Anna Lyon, Thomas and Catherine Scott, Elihu Ayers and Lydia Owen, and of Henry Harrison Dean, Sr. and Charity Beamer; ggg-grandson of William Allen, Sr. and Mary Lewis, Robert Lyon, Nathaniel Ayers and Barbara Murphy, John Owen and Elizabeth Nichols, and Peter Richard Beamer. Joe Harrold, as he was called by family and friends, was married on Thursday, September 6, 1906, in Hillsville, Carroll County, Virginia, to the former Matilda (Till) Elizabeth Ayers (daughter of James Ayers and Elitha Haynes). She was born January 3, 1882 and died October 3rd 1968, buried Mt. Bethel Moravian Church Cemetery. He is survived by a son Wayne Harlan Harrold, Sr. (and wife Lorraine Crawford); a daughter Novella [Harrold] Devilbliss; a number of grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by a daughter Vida Helen [Harrold] Marshall, who died August 10, 1957, buried Mt. Bethel Moravian Church Cemetery; brothers: Wesley David Harrold/Harrell (and wife Mary Bell [Barnes] Harrold/Harrell), Walter Booker Harrold (and wife Lucy Ann [McMillian] Harrold), Robert Sylvester Harrold (and wife Ulrica Rica [McMillian] Harrold); and Thomas C. Harrold (and wife Elizabeth Vipperman); one sister Rhoda Agnes [Harrold] Ayers (and husband William Madison Ayers). Mr. Harrold was Owner and Operator of a well-known and frequented Shoe Repair Shop in Carroll County for many years. He was a gentle man and a much respected citizen of the county. Joe and Till enjoyed traveling and visitng their relatives. His gentle and kind nature will be missed by family and friends alike. After the funeral service at Mt. Bethel Moravian Church, he will be buried in the church Cemetery. Mt. Bethel is the oldest Moravian Church in Virginia, the resting place of many members of the Harrold and Ayers family.
