Obituary of Enos Sylvester Harrold, 1918 - Carroll Co. VA Enos Sylvester Harrold passed away from complications of influence on October 28, 1918. He was born in Patrick County, Virginia, August 15, 1839, and spent his life after 1842 in Carroll County. He was the son of Elijah Harrold and Catherine [Scott] Harrold, and grandson of John Scott and Affirah Ayers, and great grandson of Thomas and Catherine Scott (of Wythe County, Virginia), and of Elihu Ayers and Lydia Owen (formerly of Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties in Virginia). He was married in Patrick County, Virginia, on August 27, 1870, when he was 28, to Evelina [Allen] Branson, age 24. She was the daughter of Robert Allen and Elvira Dean, and granddaughter of Carr Allen and Temperance Daniel, and of Henry Harrison Dean, Jr. and Keturah Ayers. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are five sons: Wesley David Harrold/Harrell (and wife Mary Bell [Barnes] Harrold/Harrell), Walter Booker Harrold (and wife Lucy Ann [McMillian] Harrold), Robert Sylvester Harrold (and wife Ulrica Rica [McMillian] Harrold), Joseph Elijah Harrold (and wife Matilda Elizabeth [Ayers] Harrold), and Thomas C. Harrold (and wife Elizabeth [Vipperman] Harrold); one daughter Rhoda Agnes Harrold (and husband William Madison Ayers); one brother: Thomas Marion Harrold (and sister-in-law Mary Jane [Allen] Harrold, sister of Evalina [Allen] Harrold); thirty-seven grandchildren, and six nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by: an infant son, who died in 1876 at five days old. As a child, Enos Sylvester Harrold became a charter member of Mt. Bethel Moravian Church, the oldest Moravian Church in Virginia, established by the home church in Salem, North Carolina, November 25, 1852. He was a faithful member and a spiritual influence on his family. On August 6, 1862, Enos enlisted in Company E of the 29th Virginia Infantry in Carroll County. He was injured and ruptured on February 1, 1863, and was in the hospital, at Petersburg, Virginia, from February 2, 1863 to March 6, 1863, and afterwards was furloughed. Records show that he served honorably, and received a life-long pension. After services at Mt. Bethel Moravian Church, he will be interred in the Harrold Family Cemetery on Ward's Gap Road, in southern Carroll, at Cana, Virginia. The cemetery is located near Mt Bethel Church on the Harrold homestead.
