Obituary for Catherine [Scott] Harrold, 1897 - Carroll Co. VA Catherine [Scott] Harrold died at her home on July 15, 1897. She was born in Carroll County, Virginia, on May 1, 1817, the daughter of John Scott and Affirah Ayers, and granddaughter of Thomas and Catherine Scott (of Wythe County, Virginia) and Elihu Ayers and Lydia Owen; and great granddaughter of Thomas, Sr. and Barbara Ayers and of John Owen and Elizabeth Nichols (of Halifax County, Virginia). On March 15, 1838, she married Elijah Harrold, a Blacksmith and Cooper, in Surry County, North Carolina, Newell Eaton, Bondsman. Since that time they have made their home, first in Patrick County, then in Carroll County, Virginia. She is survived by sons: Enos Sylvester Harrold (and wife Evalina [Allen] Harrold), and Thomas Marion Harrold (and wife Mary Jane [Allen] Harrold, a sister of Evalina). She is further survived by brothers: Thomas Scott (and wife Matilda Hiatt) and John Scott, Jr.; sisters: Lydia Scott (and husband Reynolds McMillian), and Elizabeth Scott (and husband Jesse E. Hiatt), and a number of grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter Emeline Scott, a Professional Hatter (wife of Enos Hiatt), in 1872. In 1852, Catherine [Scott] Harrold became a charter member of Mt. Bethel Moravian Church, the oldest Moravian Church in Virginia. The Moravian Church in Salem, North Carolina, recorded her baptism and that of her husband Elijah Harrold, as well as that of her father John Scott, and her mother Affirah Ayers, who was formerly a Mormon, but who made a new profession of her faith. Catherine was known by her family, neighbors, and friends as a gentle woman, with true religious devotion, and kindness toward everyone. After the funeral services, she will be buried in the Harrold Family Cemetery on Ward's Gap Road at Cana, in Carroll County, Virginia. The cemetery is located on the Harrold Homestead property, near Mt. Bethel Moravian Church.
