Obituary of Dudley McMillian, 1864 - Carroll Co. VA Dudley McMillian died at his home in Cana, Virginia, on Sunday, July 7th, 1864. He was born in 1785 in North Carolina, the son of Abraham and Elizabeth McMillian. He was married on Friday, July 5, 1805 in Patrick County, Virginia, to Elizabeth Hicks, daughter of Samuel Hicks, originally of North Carolina. Surviving are sons: Nathaniel McMillian (and wife Jane G. Hendricks); Greenville Penn McMillian (and wife Sarah Combs), Henry R. McMillian (and wife Frances Hobbs Archer), and James Lee McMillian (and wife Sarah Jane McMillian); daughters: Elizabeth McMillian (and husband Culland Richardson) and Nancy McMillian (and husband Nathan Hiatt); brothers: Nathaniel McMillian (and wife Anna McMillian), Henry McMillian (and wife Sarah [Daniel] McMillian), Stephen McMillian (husband of Martha [Blansett] McMillian, deceased); and a number of nieces and nephews and grandchildren). He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth [Hicks] McMillian, on Wednesday, September 21, 1859; a son Samuel McMillian, husband of Nancy Hiatt. Dudley McMillian was active in community affairs, and he appears in many records as a witness to legal documents and public events. He loved to go to auctions of his neighbors property, and often was a buyer and seller. He owned 182 acres of land, which he purchased from William McMillian, February 10, 1815, located on the headwaters of Lovings Creek. He loved to work in his apple orchard, and farmed and raised sheep and cattle. Dudley McMillian was one of the founders of Mt. Bethel Moravian Church, the oldest Moravian Church in Virginia. Long before the church was built the Moravians in Salem, North Carolina, sent missionaries to Patrick and Carroll Counties. Zevely and Schultz recorded in their journals in German many colorful sketches of some of the earlier Carroll County citizens. Dudley McMillian is singled out as a generous spirit, who served as guide that took the men around the community, where they held religious services and distributed Bibles. His children and grandchildren will rise and call him blessed for his devotion to God. Following funeral services, Dudley will be laid to rest in the McMillian Family Cemetery at Cana in Carroll County, Virginia.
