Obituary for James Hoke McMillian, 1960 - Carroll Co. VA James Hoke McMillian passed away June 21, 1960 at his home in Martinsville, Virginia. He was born in Carroll County, Virginia, on September 8, 1896, the son of Samuel Dudley McMillian and Sarah Ann McMillian and the grandson of Captain James Lee McMillian and Sarah Jane McMillian, and of Joseph McMillian, Sr. and Nancy Ann Haynes. He was married on July 2, 1921, to Mary Ruth Allen, of Rockingham, North Carolina, who survives. Others survivors include two daughters: Katherine Juanita McMillian Franklin (and husband Elmo Franklin), and Doris McMillian Edwards (and husband Raymond Edwards), as well as a number of grandchildren; brothers: James Orville McMillian, of Chula, Virginia; Arnold Carew (Ponce) McMillian (and wife Georgia Bell Boyd McMillian), of Winston Salem, North Carolina; sisters Ulrica Rica McMillian Harrold, of Winston-Salem and Elsie Earnestine McMillian Thomas, of Mt. Airy, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Melissa Gray McMillian, Elizabeth Mae McMillian Cline (and husband Raleigh Gordon Jefferson Cline, Sr.), and Iris McMillian Towe (and husband Albert Sidney Towe). A veteran of WWI, he spent his early life in Carroll County, then moved to Winston-Salem, NC, where he was married to Ruth Allen. His first home after marriage was with his sister ELizabeth and husband Rawl, and soon after with sister Rica and husband Bob. He soon became a well-known Builder and Contractor, sometimes in the early years working with his brother-in-law Robert Sylvester Harrold. His buildings still stand as a reminder of the fine craftsmanship and of the patient care he put into his work. His black hair and brown eyes and other features marked him to be of the Patrick/Carroll County McMillian clan. His pleasant and jovial personality made him popular among all those who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
