Obituary of Mary Emerline McMillian, 1990 - Carroll County, Virginia Mrs. Mary Emerline McMillian, age 87, of Route 1, Cana, Virginia, died on Wednesday November 28, 1990, at The Guardian Care Nursing Home in Elkin, North Carolina. She was born Tuesday, April 21, 1903, in Carroll County, Virginia, and grew up on the Headwaters of Lovill's Creek and attended Ward Gap School. She was the daughter of Joseph D. McMillian and Abbacialla [Haynes] McMillian, who were married in 1890; granddaughter of Joseph McMillian, Sr. and Nancy Ann Haynes and of William Haynes and Hester [Banks] Haynes; and great granddaughter of Richard and Mary Haynes and Nathaniel and Anna McMillian. She was the grand niece of Lieutenant Colenel Alexander Haynes, who was in Company E. of the 29th Virginia Infantry, and who died as a result of wounds at Drewery's Bluff, Virginia. Mrs. McMillian was the widow of Arthur Shaffer McMillian, and a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters Naomi [McMillian] Ayers (wife of Wayne Ayers), and Novella [McMillian] Kirk, (wife of Milton Kirk); one brother Roy McMillian; and three grandchildren Stephen Newman, Patricia Stallard, and Dawn Kirk; one great grandchild, Bradley Newman. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Edith McMillian and Mozelle [McMillian] Newman and a son Cecil McMillian, as well as by brothers Edgar F. McMillian (wife Annie Clines), Samuel H. McMillian, and Ray McMillian (wife Edith Jane McMillian); and three sisters Cara Ida [McMillian] Ayers (husband Esau J. Ayers), Lydia J. [McMillian] Haynes (husband Garland Haynes), and Tina McMillian. Mrs. McMillian's body will remain at The Moody Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state for thirty minutes before the service. The family will receive friends from 7 till 9 P.M. Thursday night at the Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2 P. M. Friday at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Larry Jones, Rev. Clay Bowman, and Rev. Clayton Hall will officiate. She will be laid to rest in the Oak grove Baptist Church Cemetery, the resting Place for many members of the McMillian, Haynes, and Guynn families. Submitted by William E.
