Obituary for Sarah Ann (McMillian) McMillian, 1927 - Carroll Co. VA Sarah Ann (McMillian) McMillian passed away on January 23, 1927 in Mt. Airy (Surry County), North Carolina. She was born in Carroll County, Virginia, on October 7, 1857, the daughter of Joseph McMillian, Sr. and Nancy Ann Haynes, and granddaughter of Nathaniel and Anna McMillian and of Archibald Haynes and Sarah Ann McMillian Haynes, for whom she was named. She was married on December 23, 1876 in Surry County, North Carolina, to Samuel Dudley McMillian, oldest son of Captain James Lee McMillian and Sarah Jane McMillian, and grandson of Dudley McMillian and Elizabeth Hicks. Her husband Samuel McMillian died around 1903. She is survived by three sons: James Orville McMillian, Arnold Carew (Ponce) McMillian (and wife Georgia Bell Boyd), of Winston-Salem, N.C., and James Hoke McMillian (and wife Mary Ruth Allen); three daughters: Iris McMillian Towe (and husband Albert Sidney Towe) of Mt. Airy, N.C., Ulrica Rica McMillian Harrold (and husband Robert Sylvester Harrold) of Winston-Salem, N. C., and Elsie Earnestine McMillian Thomas (and husband William Arthur Thomas) of Mt. Airy, N. C.; and sixteen grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters: Melissa Gray (Lissie) McMillian in 1895, and Elizabeth Mae McMillian Cline in 1922). Mrs. McMillian had made her home in recent years with her daughter Elsie Thomas in Mt. Airy, N. C. Her children praised her for her kindness and sweetness. She practiced humility, and passed many admirable traits down to her descendants. Her children spoke of her beautiful large brown eyes and dark hair with admiration. Her recipes, which she inherited in part from her parents and grandparents, are a true heritage too. Following the funeral services, Sarah Ann McMillian will be laid to rest in the McMillian Family Cemetery at Cana in Carroll County, Virginia.
