Obituary or Iris McMillian Towe, 1955 - Carroll Co. VA Iris McMillian Towe passed away peacefully on September 1, 1955 in Winston-Salem (Forsyth County) North Carolina, at the Maple Grove Rest Home. She was born March 10, 1877 in Carroll County, Virginia, the daughter of Samuel Dudley McMillian and Sarah Ann McMillian; and the granddaughter of Joseph McMillian, Sr. and Nancy Ann Haynes, and of Captain James Lee McMillian and Sarah Jane McMillian. They moved to Surry, North Carolina after 1910. On August 14, 1897, Iris married Albert Sidney Towe, a well-known Mt. Airy merchant, son of Francis (Frank) W. Towe and Larthenia Payne; and grandson of Anderson and Priscilla Towe, who came Davidson County, North Carolina. Sidney died March 4, 1954. She is survived by three brothers, James Orville McMillian, Arnold Carew (Ponce) McMillian (and wife Georgia Belle Boyd McMillian), and James Hoke McMillian (and wife Mary Ruth Allen); and two sisters Ulrica Rica McMillian Harrold, and Elsie Earnestine McMillian Thomas. She was preceded in death by two sisters Melissa Gray McMillian and Elizabeth Mae McMillian Cline. Fifteen nephews and nieces also survive. The Towes lived for many years in their beautiful home at 459 North Main Street in Mt. Airy. Iris was known for her beautiful gardens and for growing prize-winning dinner-plate dahlias. Their reputation for their ever overflowing hospitality follows them. They were faithful members of St. Paul's Church of the Brethren in Carroll County, Virginia, a church which Sidney Towe's family was instrumental in establishing. The funeral Services are to held at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, and she will be buried in Oakdale Cemetery on North Main in the city.
