Obituary for Albert Sidney Towe, 1954 - Carroll Co. VA Albert Sidney Towe (age 84) died on March 4, 1954 in Winston-Salem (Forsyth County), North Carolina, at the Maple Grove Rest Home. He was born May 31, 1869 in Carroll County, Virginia, son of Francis (Frank) W. Towe and Larthenia Payne, and grandson of Anderson and Priscilla Towe, from Edinburg, Scotland, who had earlier lived in Davidson County, North Carolina. Sidney was a well-known and respected merchant in Mt. Airy, North Carolina. On August 14, 1897 he married Iris McMillian, b. March 10, 1877 (who survives), daughter of Samuel Dudley McMillian and Sarah Ann McMillian, and granddaughter of Joseph McMillian, Sr. and Nancy Ann Haynes, and of Captain James Lee McMillian and Sarah Jane McMillian. His family were co-founders of St. Pauls Church of the Brethren in Carroll County. His uncle William Henry Towe was one of several Ministers which the Towe family produced. Sidney and Iris were faithful members of the church for many decades. For years the Towes lived in their beautiful house at 459 North Main Street. Their home maintained a religious atmosphere, with rooms of paintings depicting Bible scenes: Angels in the Sky over the birth of Christ, and The Great White Judgment Throne. Sidney grew a large garden and kept a well-stocked root cellar for the winter, and was proud of Iris's accomplishments, growing her flowers. They were known for their unending hospitality and friendliness. Sidney's funeral will be conducted by Moody's Funeral Home in Mt. Airy, and he will be buried in Oakdale Cemetery on North Main Street in the City.
