Marston Family Bible w/Letter dated 1966 - Charles City Co. VA 704 Stratfield Road Fairfield, CN 06430 November, 1966 Mr. Lewis A. McMurran, Jr. 1109 Riverside Drive Newport News, VA 23601 Dear Mr. McMurran: Thank you very much for your letter dated October 31, 1966. Up until now I had not been able to locate James S. Epps 12324. In studying the book by Mrs. Clark, I had noted that Edmund Eppes had a son James, but I got the impression that this family moved to Chesterfield County. As requested I am enclosing copies of two pages from the Bible which I have. The pages in the bible have been terribly mutilated. On the pages giving births you will note many Marston births. These are the children of Anna Martha Major who married her first cousin Littleberry A. Marston. He was the son of Thomas Henry Marston and Rebecca Eppes. This Bible was in the Marston family for years. Of the six children of Edward Glarster Major and Mary Ann Eppes, three died while children, namely, John B., Mary Elizabeth and Rebecca P. Major. As stated Anna Martha Major married Littleberry A. Marston. I don’t have their dates of death but they are buried in Mount Pleasant Church yard in Charles City County. This is the same burial ground where my father is buried, my two sets of grandparents and my Nance great-grandparents. Sally Glarster Major married Benjamin Woodward Nance. These were the parents of my mother. Edward Major married Julia Ann Nance. These were the parents of my father. So you see my mother and father were double first cousins. I have a fairly complete list of the descendants of Sally Glarster Major and Edward Major. The grave of Rebecca Eppes Marston was located on a farm near Roxbury, VA with this inscription: “Here lies the body of Mrs. Rebecca Marston Consort of Thos. H. Marston. Died Sept. 13th, 1857 in the 44th year of her age.” Mary Ann Eppes and Edward Glarster Major are buried along with their three children in unmarked graves in the woods near “Burlington” in Charles City County. My father and his brother George have fox hunted over this area many times. I had my father and Uncle George show me the area. All there is now are two long sink-holes and three smaller ones. Edward Glarster Major born December 13, 1807, the son of Edward Major and Sarah Hunnicut, died February 10, 1849. Mary Ann Eppes Major born May 12, 1818, died August 9, 1859. As to your question concerning John Major who married an Elizabeth Epes or Eppes, I have no record of the John Major. There was a John Major from Charles City County who fought in the Revolution who was my ancestor. This John you speak of could be from King William County. Below I am showing a paragraph from “The Majors and Their Marriages” by James Branch Cabell, page 103. “There is a family tradition that John Major took part in the Battle of Monmouth, serving in one of the Virginia regiments; but research, unluckily, affords no proof of this. There was very certainly a John Major who enlisted 15 February 1777 in Captain James Quarles’ Company in the Second Virginia State Regiment, for three years, and was a member of Captain William Long’s Company therein as late as November 1779, and as such, he must have been present at Monmouth and under fire of General Washington’s historical profanity. But for the services of this John Major, Bounty Warrant No. 3830 (for 100 acres) and 57 pounds, 7 shillings was granted in April 1785 to William Bigger, as assignee of Wlliam Major deceased. So that this was evidently one of the King William County Majors, several of whom were in the Revolution, and of whom at least two (Compare the Journal of the Virginia House of Delegates, for 11 December 1779) died in service; and could not possibly have been John Major of Charles City, since the latter had no son named William, and survived as will be seen, until 1810.” I shall be glad to furnish you with more details on the descendants of Sally Glarster Major and Edward Major if you need them. Sincerely, William F. Major Following are names listed in the Major Family Bible: BIRTHS: John B.
