All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ****************************************************************** WATKINS/GAINES CEMETERY Route 637 just south of Route 642 Saxe, Virginia This is a private cemetery behind locked gates and about 1/8 mile down a very rough dirt road. When I was allowed to go there I could not drive a car since the weeds were about 5 feet high and the road was very rough. I also have photographs of most of the graves mentioned. M. and Elizabeth Venable Watkins" WATKINS, Isaac Read, b. 27 June 1821, d. 22 December 1885 WATKINS, Thomas, b. 5 June 1816, d. 26 Sept. 1901 GAINES, Beatrice, b. 28 Oct. 1914, d. 21 Oct. 1990 On tombstone the name: "Hrubec" GAINES, Elizabeth, Oct. 12, 1913 - Nov. 23, 1990 - "May She Rest" Small stone 3 feet from grave with initials: "I.G.W." ANDREW, A. b. 31 Dec. 1910 - d. 10 Nov. 1990 GAINES, Clement Carrington, March 15, 1857 - Jan. 13, 1943 Small stone about 3 feet away, 12 inches high initials "R.H.G." Stone is leaning and almost gone. GAINES, Martha Watkins, Oct. 12, 1855 - June 10, 1950 GAINES, Elizabeth Venable, Born April 25, 1860 - died April 16, 1942 A stone approx. 5 feet behind this one and barely sticking above ground says: "R.V.G." GAINES, Richard H. 1862 - 1932, "A dear brother." An additional small stone about 5 feet away, initials: "E.M.W.G." WATKINS, Isaac G., son of Wm. I. & E.C. Watkins, b. Feb. 28th 1853, d. Jan. 1874 "God is love" To left of Isaac are 3 unreadable stones, only about 8 to 12 inches above ground. VENABLE, Elizabeth Woodson, "Wife of W.M. Watkins" born May 11, 1782, died April 7, 1858 "Thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shall shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning" Small white foot stone with initials: E.W.V.W. WATKINS, William Morton, born April 22, 1773, died Feb. 5, 1865 "I am the resurrection and the life: He that believeth in me, though he were dead yet shall he live." An additional small white stone, very old and unreadable by this tombstone. WATKINS, Jane Virginia, "Wife of Richard V. Gaines" - born May 20, 1829, died Dec. 23, 1863 "The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me." This is a very large and beautiful stone. An Additional, small white stone, approx. 12-14 inches above the ground has initials: J.V. W.G. WATKINS, Margaret Watkins, Wife of Richard V. Gaines" - born Feb. 2, 1827, died Dec. 12, 1896 "The eternal God is thy dwelling place and underneath are the everlasting arms." This is a very large and beautiful stone. Elizabeth was the sister of Margaret, listed above. GAINES, Richard Venable , April 16, 1830 - Oct. 31, 1916 "In thy light shall we see light" Psalms 36.9 There is a very small amount of land left for burials and many graves already gone. The little cemetery is enclosed with two iron gates and an iron fence with the names GAINES and WATKINS engraved on the gates. The gates were made in Cincinatti, Ohio. This cemetery is not accessible to anyone since it is a private cemetery.
