According to an appointment of the Appomattox Association of Baptists, Elders Elisha Collins and Elijah W. Roach met at the new meeting house, called Midway, and, on Mon- day September 30th 1833 proceeded to constitute a church upon the following preamble and articles of faith.... The authority to assemble or congregate will not, we presume, be denyed by any intelligent Christian, for we understand the very word "Church" to mean an assembly or congregation and nothing more. A "Church of Christ," then we understand to be a company of professing Christians, united to each other by their own voluntary consent, acknowledging obedience to God, and not to men - possessing within themselves the indubitable right of determining for themselves, what they consider fundamental truths, and the proper mode of enforcing those truths. A Church of Christ is not national but congregational, therefore the members of each church are accountable to God, and to each other, for the neglect of any duty, and for the commission of any evil. And as no society can exist without laws for the regulation of its affairs, to which law every member professes at the time of his admission, his determination to submit, so, in like manner the church of the Redeemer has its social rules, by which it, in its associated capacity should be governed:- and that church which neglects this duty is like a State in which the administration of justice is omitted and crime practised with impunity. The design of church union, which consists in mutual watchfulness is lost. Backsliders are encouraged to go further astray. Hypocrites are patronised in their self delusion. The society is corrupted and the honour of religion is compromised. To this sin, the Apostle no doubt, had reference in those awful words, "If any man defile the temple of God him shall God destroy." The church is this temple, and to defile it, is to introduce improper members to its communion, or to tolerate them in the practice of sin. A single unpunished transgressor troubled the whole camp of Israel, and brought calamity upon a nation, nor could the favor of God rest upon the people, til Achan was discovered and destroyed. Nothing can be conceived of more likely to grieve the Holy Spirit or to induce him to withdraw his gracious influences, from a church than the neglect of scriptural discipline. No further proof is wanting to establish the fact than the mere looking into those churches, where this discipline is not attended to, for, there we find that ignorance and vice reign uncontrolled. The advantages of discipline (so much neglected by our churches), are obvious and numerous. It reclaims backsliders, detects hypocrites - circulates a salutory awe thro' the church - adds an additional incentive to watchfulness and prayer, by exhibiting the most affecting proofs of human frailty, & the painful consequences, resulting from its exposure, and is a publick testimony, borne by the church against all unrighteousness. Surely then, it becomes the several churches to adopt a proper form of discipline, and why may not all agree in one? Why may not every church & association unite in the same faith and government? We therefore unite, having these views in the following fundamental doctrines, 1. That the Lord our God is but one only living & true God, infinite in being and perfection most holy, most wise, most free, most absolute, working all things according to the counsel of his own immutable and righteous will, forgiving iniquity transgression and sin, but who will by no means spare the guilty. In this divine and infinite being, we believe, there are three substances , the Father the Word (or son) and the Holy Spirit, and this blessed, but mysterious doctrine of the Trinity is the foundation of all our communion with God & comfortable dependence on Him. 2. That God created man upright and perfect, and that he gave him a righteous law, which had been unto life, had he kept it - yet he did not long abide in this honor, but through the subtlety of Satan, Eve was seduced, then, by her, Adam was seduced, both without compulsion, but wilfully - therefore they with all their sons and daughters died, or, as the Apostle expresses it, are dead in trespasses and in sin. 3. That, by virtue of the fulfilment of God's Holy Law by his only Son, Jesus Christ, and by virtue of that atonement made for sin in the death of Gods dear Son, a way has been opened, for the salvation of sinners, altogether consistent with the mercy and justice of a Holy & sin hating God. 4. That without faith in Jesus Christ and repentance towards God, no sinner can be justified or saved, and that in the exercise of true faith all may be saved. 5. We believe in the special and direct influences of the Holy Spirit, in changing the heart of a sinner, so that without the application of the word, graciously by the Holy Spirit, the heart cannot be renewed, nor that change produced, which we call regeneration. 6. We believe that by the Holy Scriptures we are commanded to baptize those and those only who are able to give satisfactory evidence of a change of heart therefore we discard the practice of receiving those who are unconscious of any such change, or are unable to give to every one that Asquith them a reason of the hope that is in them with meekness and fear. 7. We believe, that according to the Holy Scriptures Baptism should be performed by immersing the body in water in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost,- and alto' we discard the doctrine of regeneration, in the act of baptism, and deny the efficacy of water, however used in changing the heart;- yet we hold that baptism, as well as the Lord's supper is essential in the system of means, instituted by a Holy God, for the perfecting of his people. 8. We believe that Baptism under the Gospel dispensation, did from the first, precede communion of the supper, and as we believe nothing to be Christian Baptism but the immersion of the body in water, according to the Scriptures, so we are bound as a church to admit none to our Communion except those who have been immersed. - - - - Members at the Constitution of Midway (Males) Name From 1.
