After the American Revolution, the place was supplied by the preachers of different denominations, whose residence, or whose passage through the Country, permitted them to visit it. But, it is believed, the first organized society was by the Methodists, in the year x The number and the names of their first members are not known. The most noted of the Methodist Ministers who served the Congregation were . X See page 114 Page 6 Introductory History of the Congregation. The highest number of members, whilst it was a Methodist Episcopal Church was . About the year this society and its Minister, with many other societies, and Ministers, Seceded from the Methodist church, being dissatisfied with its government, and were organized, imperfectly however, by the name of the "Republican Methodist Church". The number of seceding members in this congregation was . The society thus organized, existed years. Their highest number of members was . Their Ministers were . In the year Mr Robinson, and a majority of the Rough Creek society, in conjunction with several other Ministers and societies, determining to have written rules of church government, organized themselves into a separate church, retaining the appellation of "Republican Methodist". Another and larger party, with the Revd James O'Kelly at their head, rejected all written rules of church government, independent of the Scriptures, and called themselves "Christians." A small minority of the Rough Page 7 Creek Congregation, with the Revd John Chappell, one of its Ministers, united with the Christians, and erected for themselves a House of worship on the southern border of the congregation. The Revd Mr Robinson continued to serve the Congregation, as its Pastor, until his death in . In the year 1818, he was succeeded by the Revd Saml Armistead, its present Pastor. Between the years 1818 and 1822, whilst the congregation was republican Methodist, with written rules of government, the highest number of members was . In the year 1822, Mr. Armistead, with a majority of his members, connected themselves, as a Church, with the Presbytery of Hanover. The record leading to that change is as follows, to wit "September 14th 1822 the church formed itself into a church session. present Saml Armistead, Pastor, with Josiah Jackson, James Madison, and Edward O. Almond, Elders, & with the following private members, Elizabeth Jackson, Pamelia F. Jackson, Patrick Jackson, Susanna Williamson, Frances Williamson, Page 8 Martha White, Mary Harvey, Elizabeth Madison, James Brown, Saml Lodge, Daniel W. Williamson, and Elizabeth Almond. Whereupon they proceeded to take into consideration the resolution of the district meeting of August last, to wit, to ascertain whether the different churches, belonging to the Republican Methodist church, would concent to appoint a committee to wait on the Presbytery of Hanover, at their next meeting, to ascertain on what terms the Rep. M. church could unite with them. After due consideration of the subject, the church agreed to appoint a committee for that purpose, 11 voting for and 5 voting against it, as follows. For the committee, Josiah Jackson, Elizabeth Jackson, Pamelia F Jackson, Patrick Jackson, James Madison, Martha Madison, Elizabeth Madison, Elizabeth White, Susanna Williamson, Daniel W Williamson & Mary Harvey, Against the committee, James Brown Senr Saml Lodge, Edward O. Almond, Elizabeth Almond and Frances Williamson. The Revd Saml Armistead, James Madison, Page 9 and Josiah Jackson were then appointed a committee to wait upon the Hanover Presbytery, and report to the church their proceedings." The application made in conformity with the preceding record, was met, on the part of the Hanover Presby, by a resolution of which the following is a copy. Charlotte Court House 19th October 1822 "The committee, to whom was referred the memorial of the Commissioners of the Republican Methodist church, reported, and the report was received, adopted, and is as follows: (note: memorial = petition) Your Committee entertain the expectation that the memorialisty, with the Churches represented by them, will see their way clear to adopt our system in the mode prescribed - and they recommend that Henderson Lee, John Davidson, Samuel Armistead, and Matthew W. Jackson, Ministers of the gospel, be received as members of the Presbytery of Hanover, and that the several Congregations, known by the name of Rough Creek Page 10 Church, Chaney Church, and old Court House Church, be received under the care of the said Presby. And that Samuel Armistead be continued Pastor of Rough Creek Church, and that Henderson Lee be continued as pastor of Chaney and old Court House Churches." A true Copy signed John H. Rice Clk. H.P. Five of the members of the church dissented from the measures adopted by their brethren and, after a time, united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Armistead and the majority of his members, retained the house of worship, and became the Presbyterian Church of Rough Creek. Their names are as follows, to wit, James Madison, a ruling Elder, residing near the College Church, to which he was transferred Josiah Jackson, Ruling Elder John S. Armistead. Daniel W. Williamson. Elders present Wm. A. Fuqua, & Robert V. Glenn. Dr. Fuqua reported that he had seen Mr. Noel who has been charged with intemperance & although he seemed very penetant at the interview, he nevertheless continues his intemperate habits without any apparent change. Page 63 Session having understood that there were about $20 in the hands of the Administrator of Josiah Jackson decd as a surplus collected for our ministry, Resolved that the sum be paid to the Revd. M. W. Jackson towards making up something for him for his services in this congregation up to this time. In view of the afflicting dispensations of of the Providence of God towards this church during the last 12 months in depriving us of our very useful & venerable Elder by death Mr. Josiah Jackson & several very useful members and one of our most effective & able ministers the Revd. Clement Read, and while we would not complain or murmer at these afflictive bereavements yet we are constrained, in consequence, to humble ourselves before him in the lowest humility. Resolved therefore that the church Session of Rough creek church do appoint Saturday before the third Sabbath in Apl. as a day of humiliation, fasting & prayer to Almighty God, that he in his mercy pour out upon us as a church & as individuals abundantly Page 64 of his holy Spirit and revive us once again: & add to our number and that the Lord of the harvest would send us another able & efficient labourer. Resolved that we respectfully tender our cordial sympathies to the Churches of Cub Creek & Bethesda in our mutual bereavement in the death of Mr. Read, and unite them & all other neighbouring churches who may feel an interest in this matter, to unite with us on the same day and thus endeavour to obtain a blessing from God and a reparation of our mutual loss. Resolved that it be recommended to this congregation to add to their number of Elders, & that Saturday before the 3rd Sabbath in Apl. be the time to take that subject into consideration.
