Will of William Lane

In the name of God Amen.  I William Lane of the County of Charlotte
and state of Virginia, being of sound disposing mind, memory and
understanding and being sensible of the certainty of death and
uncertainty of this transitory life do make publish and declare this as
and for my last will and testament.  I recommend my soul into the
hands of Almighty God with joyful insparation that through the merits
of Jesus Christ to enjoy life eternal and my body to the earth from
whence it was taken to be buried in Christian burial at the descretion
of my Executor hereafter to be named, as for such estate as it has
pleased God to bless me with after the payment of my just debts,
funeral charges & necessary expenses of administration.  I dispose of
as followeth Item 1st I give unto my two single daughters Sarah &
Elizabeth Lane, jointly and equally the land and plantation whereon I
now live containing twenty acres more or less and also two feather
beds steads & furniture of their own choice which land & beds I give
unto them and their heirs forever.
Item 2nd It is my will and desire that the balance of my estate of what
kind serves be sold and the money arising from such sale be divided
equally between all my children (to wit) Benjamin Lane, Sarah M. Lane,
Elizabeth Lane, Phillip Lane, Allen Lane, Esther M. Toombs (formerly
Esther Lane), Polly W. Watts (formerly Polly Lane) and James B. Lane
which I give unto them and to their heirs forever.  Item 3rd I nominate
and appoint my son James B. Lane whole and soul Executor to this my
last will and testament - In witness whereof I have hereunto set my
hand and affixed my seal this twenty sixth day of May one thousand
eight hundred and thirty two.  Signed, sealed published and declared by
the above named William Lane as and for his last will & testament in
the presence of us whoes names are hereunto affixed as witnesses.

At a court held for Charlotte County the sixth day of August 1834 this
last will and testament of William Lane decd was produced in court and
the same was proven by the oath of William Marshall at a court held for
witnesses thereto and ordered to be certified.  And thereupon at a
court held for the said county the 3rd day of November 1834.  The said
will was further proved by the oath of George W. Roberts another of the
subscribing witnesses thereto and entered to be recorded.  And in the
motion of James B. Lane the executor therin named who made oath
according to law.  Probate thereof is granted him in due form on giving
bond and security.  Whereupon he with Anderson Toombs & Frances
Barnes his securities entere into and acknowledged bond in the
penalty of five hundred dollars executioned as the law requires.
