In the name of God Amen I James Lain of Charlotte being in very low state of
health but of perfect mind and memory blessed be God for the same do this day
and year make ordain and publish this my last will and testament in manner and
form following.  Item I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Elizabeth Lain the
use of the houses and plantation where on I now live during her natural life,
likewise the use of all my stock of every kind and my household furniture of
every kind during her natural life.  Item I give and bequeath to my son James
Lain one hundred acres of land.  Item I give and bequeath to my two sons John
and William Lain all the rest of my land whereon I now live containing three
hundred acres.  Be the same more or less to be equally divided between them the
manner plantation to John Lain the other part to William Lain and further it is
my desire that my son James Lain should have his part where he has made a
plantation together with his buildings.  It is likewise my will and desire that
after the death of my beloved wife Elizabeth Lain that my stock of every kind
and household furniture of every kind be equally divided between the following
children.  That is John Lain, William Lain, Bettie Lain, Mary Lain and Sally
Lain.  My daughter Ann Harris have received her part already and lastly I do
constitute and appoint my loving wife Elizabeth Lain, John Lain and William Lain
to be the Executors of this my last will and testament revoaking all former
wills by me made as witness my hand and seal this sixteenth day of January one
thousand seven hundred and eighty one.

At a court held for Charlotte County the 2nd day of July 1781

The within written last will and testament of James Lane dec'd was exhibited in
court by Elizabeth Lane and John Lane the Executrix and Executor therein named
and the same was proved by the oaths of William Roberts and William Sansome two
of the witnesses to subscribed and ordered to be recorded, on the motion of the
said Executor and Executrix who made oath according to law.  Certificate is
granted them for obtaining a probate of the said will in due form, they giving
security whereupon they together with John Collier, Robert (Smith?) and George
Brown their securities entered into and acknowledged their bond for that
purpose.  Reserving liberty to William Lane the other Executor to join in the
probate thereof when he shall think fit.
