Mr. Feil was born September 10, 1918, in Maybeury, West Virginia, one of three children of Clifford M. Feil and Ruth W. Feil. Mr. Feil was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Clifford, who died in infancy; and his sister, Katherine F. Armentrout. Surviving him are his wife of 67 years, Neville Wood Feil, of Charlottesville; his three children, James W. Feil and his wife, Ann Sharolyn, of Minneapolis ,Minnesota, and University Park, Florida; Ralph L. Feil and his wife, Punkie, of Charlottesville; and Nancy F. Lowry and her husband, John, of Charlottesville; nine grandchildren, Ashlyn F. Holz, Holly F. Molskness, and J. David Feil, all of the Minneapolis area, Katherine F. Dowdy of Farmville, Elizabeth F. Matthews of Charlottesville, Bethany W. Feil of Alexandria, James W. Lowry M.D. of Shelby, North Carolina, D. Edward Lowry of Los Angeles, and Michaux L. Hood of Charlottesville; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and their children. After the death of his father, Mr. Feil moved to Charlottesville, at the age of 12, and received his secondary education in the Charlottesville Public Schools. He attended the University of Virginia School of Engineering, serving as its Vice President in his fourth year, and as a representative on the Honor Committee, receiving his degree in 1939. Following his formal education, Mr. Feil worked for Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New York for five years, before returning to Charlottesville in the employ of the Institute of Textile Technology, where he continued to work until his retirement, with the exception of eight years spent at Dawborn Brothers Incorporated in Waynesboro. After his retirement in 1986, Mr. Feil continued to consult on the subject of cotton spinning, in which he was considered one of the world's most prominent experts. Mr. Feil was a long time member of Farmington Country Club and the First Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, where he served as deacon, elder and was a teaching member of the Men's Bible Class. He was also a member of the Raven Society. Big Ralph, as he was affectionately known, was deeply loved and respected by all of his family and friends. He was particularly appreciated for his intellect, common sense, strong sense of moral values, kindness, and gentle, giving and selfless nature. He was devoted to his family, especially his wife, Neville, to whose care and happiness he steadfastly dedicated his retirement years. In his leisure time he particularly enjoyed playing golf and fishing with family members, especially his life long companions, Dr. John Morris; Dr. James Wood; his brothers-in-law; and his cousin, Ricky Watson. There will be a private burial to be attended by family and extended family, 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at Maplewood Cemetery, followed by a memorial service open to the public at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Park Street, with Dr. Sam Massey officiating. The family will receive guests at the Church Fellowship Hall following the service. The family suggests that any who wish to do so make memorial contributions to a favorite charity.
