Born April 1, 1913, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late Mariah Carter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon James Reid; and brothers, Theodore and Eddie Carter; and her sister, Bell Jackson. The Reverend Reid was educated in the Albemarle County Public School System and graduated from the Berean Bible Institute in New York City in 1941. She was licensed to preach in 1942 in New York City and received her ordination to the Gospel Ministry in 1944. Shortly thereafter, she returned to Albemarle County and began her preaching ministry. The Reverend Reid's pastoral ministry spanned 44 years at the Wildon Grove Baptist Church in Gordonsville, Virginia, and the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Earlysville, Virginia. She held offices and member-ship in various organizations; Church Women United, Piedmont Baptist Association, (Women's Auxiliary and Sunday School Auxiliary), Lott Carey Missions Convention, and the Ministers and Deacon's Union. The Reverend Reid leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted family, her daughters, Evelyne C. William of Charlottesville, Virginia, Ernestine Boling of Fishersville, Virginia, Gladys Osborne of Lexington, Kentucky, Vernesse Roberts of Manassas, Virginia; a foster daughter, Barbara Cowan of Roanoke, Virginia; grand-children, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other beloved relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008, at St. John Baptist Church with the Reverend Xavier Jackson officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Memorial Cemetery. The Reverend Reid will lie in state one hour prior to services at the St. John Baptist Church, 1595 St. John Road, Cobham, Virginia. In lieu of flowers and in memory of their mother the family respectfully request that monetary donations be sent to the Chapman Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 2064 Stony Point Road, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
