Hutcheson Cemetery Location: 7 miles from Portsmouth, Virginia, on Route #17 to Deep Creek, turn east of the canal locks, directly across creek. Chesapeake, Virginia DATE: 1832 OWNERS: Originally owned by Thomas Cherry DESCRIPTION: There are only three graves stones, two of them stand together. The graveyard is not well kept. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Near this burying ground there stood until about 25 years ago (1937), an old “Dutch roof brick house”. This was the property and home many years ago of one Thomas Cherry. In this section of the county, near Deep Creek, there were so many Cherrys’ that their neighbors were forced to use nick-names to distinguish between the numerous Thomases, Johns, etc. for instance “Gentleman Tom”, “Smoky Tom” and “Honey Tom”. In the graveyard there are only three graves stones of that period. Felix Fertee, like many other French refugees from the West Indies in the early part of the last century came to Norfolk section. Felix found his way to Deep Creek, where he married a Miss Cherry, where he kept store and was justice of the Norfolk County Court. To the memory of Polly G. Consort of Gisbourne Cherry Who departed this life Sept. 28th, 1832 Aged 33 years In memory of Gisbourne Cherry Died Oct. 1836 He sleeps in Jesus Erected by his son, Gis. J.
