CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Archer Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Archer graveyard: 1936 Oct. 20 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: 2 miles north of Petersburg, Virginia, .9 mile east on Conduit Road. Chesterfield County DATE: 1774 OWNERS: Archer family. DESCRIPTION: “Mount Pleasant”, the original seat of the Archer family in Chesterfield County, lies secluded now among old trees that sway and groan in the wind sweeping up from the Appomattox River, pining for the once happy days that have long ago forsaken the place. Abandoned and left a helpless victim of time and neglect, the old house is rapidly falling away, and unless immediate steps are taken to preserve it, which is doubtful, it will soon become a thing of the past. But even farther along the road to oblivion is the graveyard which lies in the woods, a short distance from the house. Here are several tombstones, about three feet in height. All of these stones are hidden in very heavy growth of honeysuckle through which one must wade knee- deep to reach them. Some of these stones have fallen and are buried beneath this mass of vines and weeds so that they are hidden entirely from view and can be trace located only by tracing the impressions made by the graves. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The epitaphs, given below, were illegible until charcoal was placed on the surface of the stones.
