DESCRIPTION: Here are several graves, marked with tombstones, two of which antedate by more (than) two decades the War Between the States. These graves are overgrown with vegetation, and part of the inscription on one of the stones is hidden beneath several inches of ground. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The house which stands 100 feet or more from the graves, is believed to be the place where Gen. Butler was “bottled up”. The inscriptions of the tombstones are as follows: Sacred to the Memory of John Henry Joseph Letthon A native of Belgium France, Who for nine years was a Steward on Ship Ganges, Who was drowned 17 September, 1839 Rosalia Ann Daughter of Tho. & Rosalia Ann Skinner Born Oct,. 13, 1843 Died Sept. 18, 1846 But though this little one is gone Thus sudden from our fond embrace, Yet in the resurrection morn We’ll see and know its lovely face. To such there is no sting in death, Then why should we anguish weep?
