CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – “British Camp” Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, British Camp graveyard: 1936 July 17 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: 3 miles southwest from Richmond, Virginia, on Broad Rock Road. Chesterfield County DATE: Approximately, 1819. OWNERS: J. W. Winfree and heirs. DESCRIPTION: Situated at “British Camp”, about three hundred feet from the house, and in a wood-covered field, is the burying ground of the Winfrees and Branches. Some years ago, a relative of the Winfree family visited the site and, wishing to preserve it against possible destruction, had thick solid walls built which, except for an iron gate, complete enclose the graves; and over these latter a heavy floor of concrete was poured, affording protection from encroaching grasses. In this floor of concrete are set tombstones, all of which appear to antedate by many years the protective walls. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The inscriptions found on these stones are as follows: Sacred to the Memory of Mary Patteson Branch daughter of Jordan and Lucy A.
