CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Brittan Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Brittan cemetery: 1937 Jan. 15 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: 5 miles north of Chesterfield, Virginia courthouse on Route #37; 2 miles east of Route #37 on Route #638; 150 yards on Route #638. Chesterfield County DATE: 1840 – date of oldest grave OWNERS: Samuel Brittan DESCRIPTION: The Brittan graveyard is very small, consisting only of two graves – those of a young wife and mother and her three year old daughter. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The grave of the child, Eliza E. Brittan, is older only by one month, and it is thought the grief which the mother felt in the loss of her only child resulted in her death. Both of these graves lie a short distance in front and within sight of the house which was once owned and occupied by Samuel Brittan, a flour inspector, in Richmond during the War Between the States. The older grave is marked by an upright granite slab, while the other is enclosed in a brick tomb approximately three feet in height on top of which rests the three by six foot tombstone. Inscriptions from these are as follows: Sacred To the memory of Louisa P. Brittan Wife of Sam’l Brittan and daughter of Stephen Hobbs Who died Sept. 8th 1840 in the 23rd year of her age She was mild and engaging Kind generous and affectionate And above all truely pious. Eliza E. only child of Sam’l and Louisa P. Brittan Died Aug. 4th 1840 in the 3rd year of her age The sweet little bud without thorn will bloom in Heaven SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Court Records, Chesterfield County, Virginia Tombstone Inscriptions Visit by worker. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
