CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Centenary Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Centenary cemetery: 1936 Dec. 12 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: At Winterpock, Virginia Chesterfield County DATE: 1813 OWNERS: The Centenary cemetery so-called because it belongs to the Centenary Methodist Church, is located in the heart of Winterpock, Virginia. DESCRIPTION: Here are a number of tombstones, many of which mark the graves of former members of the nearby church. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: A particularly interesting though tragic story is told in connection with one of these tombstones, the one that marks the grave of Dr. R.B. Hobson, who died by his own hand, though unintentionally. It seems that Dr. Hobson, who was one of the few remaining old-fashioned country doctors, was roused from his bed late one night in September by a persistent knocking on his door. Being a physician and accustomed to such nocturnal interruptions, Dr. Hobson opened the door and was told by his caller that one of his patient’s had suddenly grown worse and needed his help. Hurriedly dressing, he went into his medicine-room and prepared a drink which was intended to keep him warm during his drive through the cold wind to his patient’s home, and in this Dr. Hobson made his fatal mistake, for having not fully awakened from his interrupted slumber, what he thought was a harmless tonic, was a deadly poison. Informing his wife that he had but a few short moments to live, they went together into his room where they remained in prayer until his death, which quickly followed.
