CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Cox Place Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Cemetery at old Cox place: 1936 Mar. 9 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: 7 miles from Chester, Virginia, and .5 mile north of Route #37 Chesterfield County DATE: 1817 OWNERS: None. DESCRIPTION: One half mile north of the highway running from Chester to Hopewell, and seven miles from Chester Post Office is an old private cemetery, the tombstones in which date back a few years prior to the War Between the States. This site is called the “Old Cox Place”. There is nothing here now, however, but the cemetery, a few broken bricks scattered here and there among the weeds, and what appear to be old breastworks. The place is situated high on the banks of the James River, overlooking Farrar’s Island. The cemetery is enclosed by a white board fence, forty-eight by sixty-nine feet. Only part of this is standing and this is tickly covered with moss. The graves themselves lie under a deep blanket of hardy periwinkle whose leaves glisten in the sunlight, falling through the overhanging boughs of a tall and ancient beech tree. Nearby are clumps of narcissus and tiger-lily. It is a very secluded place and would be inaccessible in an automobile after a rain. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The inscriptions on the tombstones are as follows: In Memory of Elizabeth W. Willson Born August 16, 1817 Died August 7, 1858 In memory of Joseph B. Willson Born of Henry C. and Elizabeth W. Willson Born October 16, 1845 Died January 5, 1859 Aged 15 years, 2 months and 20 days In Memory of Henrietta Willson Daughter of Henry and Elizabeth W.
