CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – “Dellwood” Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Dellwood graveyard: 1937 Apr. 12 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: 3.5 miles north of Matoaca, Virginia, on Route #600, thence .5 mile west of Route #600 on Route #626. .8 mile north of Route #626. Chesterfield County DATE: Judging from the date inscribed on the earliest tombstone, the first burial here occured in 1848. OWNERS: “Dellwood” is at present owned by the Virginia State College (for negroes) at Petersburg. The names of all its former owners have not yet been determined. DESCRIPTION: The graveyard at “Dellwood” is typical of many of those found on the more pretentious estates. It lies about 300 feet south of the house itself, in a grove of magnificent old cedars and hollies which tower over spemtrical specimens of buxus sempervirens. The whole is enclosed by a sturdy brick wall about 5 feet in height, which age has turned a deep red, and which give to the place a very old appearance. The beauty of the entrance is enhanced by two large box trees planted at each side and trained to form an almost perfect arch. Within the spacious enclosure and 3 graves, lying side by side and marked by granite stones. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: John Winston Jones, whose portrait hangs in the United States Capital, was a prominent political figure. Although originally from Amelia County, he settled at “Dellwood” in Chesterfield and served this county as Commonwealth’s Attorney for several years. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives for several terms, and was a speaker of this body in 1843-45. He was also an eminent lawyer, and after leaving Congress, he again served his adopted county – this time in the House of Delegates, where he remained until his death. In Memory of Out Father John W.
