CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Dyson Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Dyson graveyard: 1936 Oct. 21 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: 3 miles west of Matoaca, Virginia, 1 mile east of River Rd., on Eanes Road. Chesterfield County DATE: 1823 OWNERS: DESCRIPTION: The Dyson graveyard is almost out of civilization. It lies on the Dryson estate which, though only one mile from one of the county’s main highways, has become remote and almost entirely isolated because of very poor roads. The graveyard itself is situated on the farthest edge of a barren field which borders a dense forest. Here are several graves, some of which are marked by tombstones consisting of granite shafts from five to six feet in height. Many of these stones are hidden amid the foliage of large box trees. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Dryson family is one of the oldest families in Chesterfield County. The Rev. Philip Slaughter in his book, “A History of Bristol Parish”. speaks of this family as having “lived immemorially near the site of Wood’s Church.” Wood’s Church is distant only by a few miles from this estate. The epitaphs are as follows: John T. Dyson Born Aug. 15, 1855 Died Oct. 5, 1897 In remembrance of Our beloved Sister Elizabeth J. Our beloved Mother Harriet P. Dyson Born April 4, 1823 Died Sept. 12, 1885 Life without thee, mother, Seems cold and dark to us, How much of joy and brightness We have lost in losing thee.
