CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Elam-Markham Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Elam-Markham graveyard: 1936 Nov. 19 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: 14 miles northeast of Chesterfield Courthouse; .4 mile north of Genite Road. Chesterfield County DATE: 1855 OWNERS: Unknown. DESCRIPTION: This graveyard lies on the Goode dairy farm, on the edge of a large cleared field, and bordering a forest. Under a heavy mat of brown leaves are the grass and two of the tombstones have fallen and are hidden from view. Nothing is known of the history of this graveyard except that it has been there “As long as anyone can remember”. It is rapidly becoming engulfed by the encroaching forest, and but for the tombstones, two of which are buried deep beneath leaves and mold, it would already be forgotten. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The epitaphs, however, after soil was removed from the face of the tombstones, are still very legible. These are as follows: Little Clifford Son of V.D. and Julia T. Markham Died July 8th, 1855 Age 2 months & 13 days In dreams I see him now, and on his angel brow, I see it written “Thou shalt see me there.” In Memory of Lily Somervill Elam Born November 4th, 1855 Died August 8th, 1856 A crown is on thy Angel brow, Thine eye the King doth see, Thy home is with Seraphs now, We joy that thou art free. Julia T. Markham Wife of V.D. Markham & daughter of William C. and Jane A. Elam died Aug. 14th 1856 aged 20 years 7 months and 13 days An affectionate child, a loving sister, a devoted Wife, a fond Mother, ardent Friend and pure Christian, faultless in every relation she sustained in life, though cut down in its morning bloom and freshness. Though brightness hath passed from the earth, Yet a star is now born in the sky And a soul hath gone home to the land of its birth Where are pleasures and fullness of joy And a new harp is strung and a new song is given To the breeze that floats o’er the garden of Heaven. In Memory of Fanny C. Elam Born Jany. 15th 1855 Died Jany. 10th 1858 She was the sunshine of our home, An angel to us given; Just when we learnt to love her most, God called her back to Heaven.
