CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – “Eppington” Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Eppington graveyard: 1936 Dec. 10 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: 5 miles south of Winterpock, Virginia at end of Hines Road. Chesterfield County DATE: 1860 OWNERS: Francis Eppes and heirs. Archibald Thweatt and heirs. DESCRIPTION: Here at old “Eppington”, often visited by President Jefferson, and once the home of his daughter Mary and son-in-law John Wayles Eppes, are buried some of the earlier members of the Eppes family. Though this graveyard has, apparently, received little care, it nevertheless has about it a quaint beauty reminiscent of older days. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Francis Eppes, the father of John Wayles Eppes, died and was buried at the Sweet Springs. However, a tombstone was erected in the Eppington graveyard bearing the dates of his birth and death, and also that of his wife – Elizabeth Eppes. Two of his daughters are buried here, and a son-in-law, Richard N. Thweatt. The Thweatts once owned this estate. It is thought that John Wayles Eppes himself was interred here, but no tombstone concerning him could be found. His wife Mary Jefferson was buried near her father’s home “Monticello”, having died shortly after the birth of her second child. The “Eppington” graveyard is situated to the front and side of the house, a few feet from the lane, The epitaphs are as follows: Here Rest the remains of Mrs. Lucy Thweatt Wife of Archibald Thweatt and daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Eppes of Eppington Died Feb. 20, 1860 in the 74th year of her age In the communion of the Protestant Episcopal Church beloved and lamented alike by the rich and the poor. A gentle sigh the fetter breaks, We scarce can say she’s gone Before her willing spirit takes Its station near the throne. This stone is erected to her memory as a token of sincere affection by her only surviving sister. Mrs. Matilda W. Spooner This Tom is Erected to the memory of Archibald Thweatt Be his bereaved widow In remembrance of his virtues And his love. He died Aug. 14th, 1844 In the 73rd year of his age.
