CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Gill Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Gill graveyard: 1936 Oct. 13 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: On River Road, 10 miles west of Petersburg, Virginia Chesterfield County DATE: 1852 – dated of oldest grave marker. OWNERS: Gill Gill Heirs Phillips DESCRIPTION: This old graveyard can hardly be called such now, for while the tombstones remain to mark the graves of two members of the Gill family who once lived on this farm, the graveyard itself has literally become part of the barnyard. Situated approximately one hundred yards to the rear of the house, and under two small trees, these graves have become the prey of depredation and neglect. Here are two tombstones. One of these stones is laid over the entire grave, while the other was originally a shaft about six feet in length which rested on a granite base. Half of the former stone has been broken off and buried beneath several inches of soil, so it was necessary to unearth it in order to secure the full inscription. The shaft of the other stone has been blown over by high winds and the base on which the epitaph appears is also partly buried in the ground. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This old farm was originally owned by the Gill family. It now belongs to the Phillips. Until recent years, a huge pear tree stood in the yard, and tradition says, it was here that General Lee made his last stop before crossing the Appomattox, having camped overnight under the shelter of this ancient tree. The inscriptions on the tombstones are as follows: To The Memory of William Gill Born Nov. 10, 1787 Died Sept. 27th 1852 I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto testimonies. Text 119th Psalm 59th verse In Memory of James T. Gill Born August 21, 1826 Died Feby. 19, 1856 I made haste and delayed not to keep thy commandments.
