Left bench inscribed: The Clark Family Right bench inscribed: The Woodcock Family History Hopewell Church was organized as a Methodist Episcopal Church in 1813. The original building's construction began in 1853, and was not completed until after the War Between the States. The Church used this building until 1891, when it was dismantled, moved, and reconstructed. In 1853, the membership was about thirty. The Church was part of the West Chesterfield Charge and the preaching was held once a month. Mr. Bonie Brown, who used a tuning fork, as the church had no organ, led the singing in those days. The Church was wired for electricity in 1947. In 1950, four classrooms were built onto the back of the Church at a total cost of $3,200. By 1957, the charge consisted of Hopewell, Trinity, and Mt. Gilead Churches. In 1960, additional classrooms, kitchen and restrooms were added to the Church along with a central heating system at a cost of $8000. In March 1961, the new brick parsonage was completed on the site across from where the Hopewell School had stood. March 1966 saw a new sanctuary capable of setting 250 people completed along with new classrooms, a pastor's study and furnishings consecrated. The old building was used as an educational building. In June 1968, the Chesterfield Charge was split and Hopewell Church became a station Church. In 1970, VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation), purchased one acre of the old school tract with the parsonage. The church in turn purchased the building and moved it to its present site and added a basement. Work was completed in the spring of 1972. In 1981, a new Education Wing was consecrated and the cornerstone was laid. The old building was removed in 1984, due to termite damage. In 1991, a new wing was added to the building. The addition consisted of kitchen, fellowship hall, rest rooms and connecting foyer. The rest of the building, including foyer, Minister's Office, Secretary's Office, sacristy, handicapped rest rooms, nursery and kindergarten, plus three classrooms was finished and dedicated in January 1999. We are proud of our building and encourage its use. We have many Sunday school classes for nursery through adulthood. Hopewell offers United Methodist Women, United Methodist Men, Youth Group, Choir activities and a very active group of Sunday school participants. Special short-term classes are provided during the year. Our building plays host to many civic groups, including Girl Scouts at all levels, AA groups, craft clubs, Women's Club and Virginia Men of Vision. Begin Tombstone Transcription: Row 1 Erla B.
