CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Jackson Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Jackson graveyard: 1936 Oct. 29 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: 6 miles southwest of Chesterfield Courthouse, .5 mile southwest Woodpecker Road. Chesterfield County DATE: 1818 OWNERS: Jackson, Clayton and Godsey families. DESCRIPTION: This old graveyard in which are buried members of the Jackson, Clayton, and Godsey families, is secluded deep in a forest and almost lost now, even from those who, in past years, were familiar with its location. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This tract of land, on which stands an old abandoned house, has been owned by the Clayton, Godsey and Jackson families, and each of these families has used this graveyard, so that while it was originally intended for a private burying ground, it now contains the graves of several different families. However, no one has been buried here for a number of years, and it is almost forgotten. The epitaphs are as follows: Hiram H. Godsey Born Apr. 9, 1818 Died June 29, 1861 The spirit is not dear Though low the body lies, But freed from pain and sorrow fled To swell beyond the skies. Lucy A. Godsey Born Sept. 27, 1822 Died Feb. 23, 1869 Death is but a sleep Beneath a Savior’s care, And he will surely, safely keep The body resting there. Angeline S. Daughter of William A. Frances Clayton Departed this life July 12, 1857 Aged 20 years. 9 mos. & 1 day. Upon this spot you come and look, She’s silent in the grave, Her delight was in the blessed Book Which opens but to save. Norman W. Godsey Born July 14, 1858 Died Sept. 29, 1879 We shall meet in the land Where spring is eternal, Where darkness never cometh, Nor sorrow nor pain, Where the flowers ne’er fade In that clime ever vernal We shall meet and our parting be never again.
