CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Matoaca Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Matoaca cemetery: 1936 Mar. 2 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: .3 mile south of River Road in Matoaca, Virginia Chesterfield County DATE: 1785 OWNERS: Public – plots owned by individuals. DESCRIPTION: This cemetery is situated on a knoll, dotted with beautiful old trees. It is a serene little place of rugged beauty. On top of the hill, along the sides, are numberless graves, very close together, but unfortunately they are marked with small plain stones. It is believed that most of these graves are those of employees of the cotton mills. Directly on the crest of the hill, is a well kept plot, approximately twelve by twelve feet, with a concrete curb. In the center is a granite monument erected by the Chesterfield Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy. According to the inscription there are sixty seven Confederate soldiers buried in the plot. The cemetery is in excellent condition and is still the public burial ground of Matoaca.
