Chesterfield County DATE: 1775 OWNERS: John Randolph Sr., father of John Randolph of Roanoke, lived at Matoax and died there in 1775. DESCRIPTION: To the east, on a rising ground, under some oaks, cedars and hollies, are three tombstones which are well preserved. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Matoax, not to be confused with the small village nearby known as Matoaca, is on the north side of the Appomattox river, above the falls, about 1 mile from Petersburg. The name is taken from the Indian and private name of Pocahontas (Matoaca) which means “She plays with something”. The Latin inscriptions on them are as follows: Johannes Randolph, Armiger, Ob.
