CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – “Violet Bank” Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Violet Bank graveyard: 1936 July 22 Research made by Craig Romaine Cemetery Location: .2 mile north of Petersburg, Va. on Route #1; thence 1 mile east on Cameron Ave.; thence south 150 feet on Royal Oak Ave.; thence east 75 feet. (In Colonial Heights) Chesterfield County DATE: 1830 OWNERS: Due to clause in an early deed, this graveyard remains a part of Violet Bank estate, but is set aside and cannot be included in the property. DESCRIPTION: Although it is protected by a stone wall, into which entrance is gained through an iron gate, this graveyard shows evidence of neglect. Within the enclosure is a mass of vines and poison ivy that completely covers the ground and engulfs some of the tombstones. Here are several graves, marked by granite slabs that originally lay over the graves, but have fallen out of place. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Jane Gray Haxall was first married to Thomas Shore, the builder and original owner of Violet Bank. At his decease in 1800, the place passed to Mrs. Shore, who later married Henry Haxall. Elizabeth Smith Shore, daughter of Thomas and Jane Gray Shore, later became the owner of Violet Bank, and married Dr. John Gilliam. Here Are Deposited the Remains of John Gilliam, M.D. of Petersburg, Va. Born April 9th A.D. 1790 Departed This Life August 15th A.D. 1843 In memory of the deceased This Tomb Is erected by his Devoted Wife. Sacred to the Memory of Mrs. Elizabeth S. Gilliam Relict of John Gilliam, M.D. And Daughter of Thomas Shore, Esq. of Violet Bank, Chesterfield County Born January 26th A.D. 1797 Departed this Life March 20th A.D. 1858 Here lies all that was mortal of Mrs. Jane Gray Haxall Daughter of Major Wall of Greensville, Formerly widow of Thomas Shore, Esq. of Violet Bank, Who departed this Life May 22nd in the year of our Lord 1831 in the Sixty Third year of her age. This Stone is erected as a small testimony of the unbounded affection of her Daughters Here Lies the body of Joseph Infant son of W. & M.L.
