At Bellona Arsenal, on the 7th inst., after a severe and protracted bilious fever, Lieut. Lucien I. Bibb, of the U. S. A., in the 23d year of his age. To a hand ever open to melting charity, a tear always ready for the misfortunes of others, a heart which benevolence might have made her seat, was added a blandness of manner, which made every one his friends. Firmest amongst the brave - boldly determined where honor and rectitude pointed out the path, yet was the spot nearest his heart soft as the cygnet’s down. Lieut. Bibb’s talents were of the first order - his acquirements beyond his years. They presented a brilliant vista of future greatness and renown. He is cut off (by the dispensation of a wise Providence) at that moment when every thing in life looked fair and promising, and when lie was just catching the first rays of the splendour that would have illuminated his future years. To those who knew him, eulogy is superfluous - he lives in their hearts. To have said less would have outraged the feelings of the whole circle of his acquaintance. Lt. Lucien BIBB, U.S. Army, KY native, d. 7 Sep 1831, Bellona Arsenal, age 22, "Richmond (VA) Whig and Commercial Journal," Vol. 57, No. 60, Sep. 12, 1831, p. 3, col. 1 Additional information: Military records show his name as Lucien J. Bibb, but the middle initial could be an "I" written in cursive. Lt. BIBB was stationed at Fortress Monroe, Oct 1827 - May 1830. He was stationed at the Bellona Arsenal by Jul 1830. He entered West Point in 1822. Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by File Manager Matt Harris (zoobug64@aol.com). file at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/chesterfield/obits/b100l4ob.txt
