David Brothers, 63, of 300 Ridge Road, an international transportation consultant and former president of the American Trucking Association, died yesterday in a local hospital. A native of Chesterfield County, Mr. Brothers owned and operated a local trucking firm, New Dixie Lines Inc., for about 25 years. He had worked for a Richmond-based trucking firm before buying the rights of a North Carolina firm and building it into a company with $9 million a year in sales. He pioneered a program of paying drivers bonuses for safe driving while expanding the operations of the firm as far south as Georgia. The business was sold in 1969 to Hemingway Transport Inc. of New Bedford, Mass. While operating the trucking firm, he served a term as President of the Virginia Highway Users Association and was vice president of the American Trucking Association in 1967, president in 1968 and chairman of the board in 1969. He moved to the Tabbs Creek area of Lancaster County where, he became a major figure in efforts to preserve the rual character of the county. He led the first successful campaign against a proposal to dredge an area of the creek he lived on and pushed for development of subdivision laws. For four years, he headed the county committee that supervised the rules he helped develop and he also was among those who wrote the zoning rules for the county. He moved back to Richmond last year. Mr. Brothers also became a consultant for Wilbur Smith Associates of Columbia, S.C., and traveled widely in Latin America and North Africa to advise countries on truck and rail development. He was a member of the Country Club of Virgnia, the Princess Anne County Club of Virginia Beach and the First Presbyterian Church of Richmond. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jane Clark Brothers; two daughters, Mrs. Jane S. Ludwig of Salem and Mrs. Barbara Duncan of Williamsburg; and three brothers and three sisters. Funeal arrangement were incomplete last night. The family requests that memorial contributions be made either to First Presbyterian Church in Richmond or to Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Weems. Additional Comments: James David Brothers was born 13 Jul 1917 in Chesterfield County, the son of John David Brothers and Tidie May Johnson Kirks. His father was born in Burgaw, North Carolina. His mother was the daughter of William Ross and Mildred Johnson of Prince George County, VA. Tidie May Johnson was first married to George H. Kirks. John David Brothers and Tidie May Johnson Kirks were married 21 Aug 1916 in Richmond, VA. His interment was in Hollywood Cemetery.
