I Bartholomew Purdue, being sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to almighty God for the same do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, in manner and form following. Viz, Item 1st First of all that my just debts & funeral expenses be paid out of my estate.-- Item 2nd. My Will is that my estate both real and personal be kept together for the support and maintainance of my wife and children, until the youngest arrives at the age of twenty one years old, and my will is that my children be educated with a tolerable education.-- Item 3rd. My will is that my real estate should not be divided, during the life of my wife Alice Perdue -- Item 4th I give and bequeath unto my nine children, viz Mary I. Purdue, Cleopatra A. Snellings, Phebe W. Purdue, Katurah J. Purdue, Samuel R. Purdue, Arsinia Purdue, Esther A. Purdue and the one name Sam (now an infant) and Cunetha A. Purdue all my estate both real and personal to be equally divided between them, when the youngest shall arrive at the age of twenty one years old, and that each one account for what their mother shall give them when they may, as it is my wish she should give them such things as she can spare conveniently, and them that have already named, to account for what I have given them. Item 5. My wish is that my negro woman Edy be sold by my executors privately or publicly as may seem best to them. Item 6th My will is that the grave yard near my dwelling house should not be sold nor divided, that one half acre be attached to it and kept as my estate, for privilege of my family (and) relations if they chose to use it--- Item 7th I sppoint Larken Snellings and J. B. Goode executors to this my last Will and Testament and I wish them each to be required to give security when they Qualify ---- B. Purdue (seal) Signed & sealed in the presence of us this 22 day of July 1840 Witnesses Stephen Wilkinson John Rowlett In Chesterfield County Court August 10th 1840 The last Will and testament of Bartholomew Purdue was proved by the oaths of Stephen Wilkinson and John Rowlett subscribing witnesses and ordered to be recorded. -- On the motion of John B. Goode and Larkin Snellings who made oaths thereto and entered into bond without security (none being required) a cerificate is granted them for obtaining probate thereof in due form. Test. P.
