The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net William Walthall Deed - December 8, 1788 Know all men by these presents that I, William Walthall, of the County of Chesterfield for the love, goodwill, and affection which I hath and doth bear towards my seventeen grandchildren, John Friend, William Archer, Field Archer, Edward Archer, Thomas Friend, Mary Osborne, Mary Walthall, Ann Walthall, Martha Field Walthall, Martha Cox, Mary Friend, Mary Archer, William Walthall, Sally Walthall, William Friend and Elizabeth Archer and for and in the future consideration of the respective sums of five pounds to me already in the hand paid by each of my respective grandchildren , the several receipts I doth hereby acknowledge. I the said William Walthall have given, granted, sold and confirmed and by these presents doth give, grant, sell and confirm unto my said seventeen grandchildren respectively and to each of them and their live heirs in severally the following named Negroes, that is to say to the said: John Friend, a Negro boy named Arthur; to Nathaniel Friend, a Negro boy named Roger; to William Archer, a Negro boy named Stephen; to Field Archer, a Negro boy named Tom; to Edward Archer, a Negro girl named Amanda; to Thomas Friend, a Negro girl named Jenny; to Mary Osborne, a Negro girl named Liddy; to Mary Walthall, a Negro named Ester; to Ann Walthall, a Negro girl named Seally; to Martha Field Walthall, a Negro girl named Patience; to Mary Friend, a Negro girl named Grace; to Mary Archer, a Negro girl named Sarah; to William Walthall, a Negro girl named Judah; to Sally Walthall, a Negro girl named Eva; to William Friend, A Negro girl named Pall; and to Elizabeth Archer, a Negro girl named Hannah and to them and their heirs in severally and the same manner and form as each Negro is named and mentioned to each respective grandchild and not to be held by the said grandchild in joint tenancy or tenancy in common but for each grandchild to have the Negro mentioned to it and for a further explanation of the same. I, William Walthall, doth by these presents warrant and will defend the said Negroes to my said grandchildren and to each of their respective heirs as followeth, to wit: the said Negro boy, Arthur, to the said John Friend and his heirs forever; the said Negro boy Roger to the said Nathaniel Friend and his heirs forever; the said Negro boy Stephen to the said William Archer and his heirs forever; the said Negro boy Tom to the said Field Archer and his heirs forever; the said Negro girl Amanda to the said to the said Edward Archer and his heirs forever; the said Negro girl Jenny to the said Thomas Friend and his heirs forever; the said Negro girl Liddy to the said Mary Osborne and her heirs forever; the said Negro girl Ester to the said Mary Walthall and her heirs forever; the said Negro girl Seally to the said Ann Walthall and her heirs forever; the said Negro girl Patience to the said Martha Field Walthall and her heirs forever; the said Negro girl Phillis to the said Martha Cox and her heirs forever; the said Negro girl Grace to the said Mary Friend and her heirs forever; the said Negro girl Sarah to the said Mary Archer and her heirs forever; the said Negro girl Judah to the said William Walthall and his heirs forever; the said Negro girl Eva to the said Sally Walthall and her heirs forever; the said Negro girl Pall to the said William Friend and his heirs forever; the said Negro girl Hannah to the said Elizabeth Archer and her heirs forever; which said Negroes I doth hereby warrant to each of my said grandchildren and their respective heirs in severally in the manner each respective Negro is named and mentioned to each respective grandchild and its heirs. In witness whereof I the said William Walthall have herewith set my hand and affixed my seal this eighth day of December in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty eight.
