Letter to James Patton, Esq., Alexandria, Va., James Kincaid, May 5, 1803 Submitted for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Debra Miller This collection of letters, bills etc. were sent to James Patton, Esq., Merchant in the old seaport of Alexandria, Va. The letters will encompass the latter 1700s - early 1800s. James Patton was b. ca. 1755 in Newton, Lima-Verry, County Derry, Ireland and he died in Alexandria, Va, date unknown at this time. He married Mollie Kincaid, place and date unknown. His parents were James Patton, Sr. (b. ca. 1734, Ireland, d. Jan. 16, 1821, Pennsylvania) and Mary Newell (b. ca. 1736 Ireland, d. June 7, 1806, Alexandria, Va.). May 5, 1803 Boston My Dear Sir, A few days ago I had much pleasure to receive your much esteemed favor of 16th Feby which afforded ____________happiness to learn that your ___________________ Family were all in good health. I have received the Crackers which you have been so kind as send us by the Ship Paulina Capt. Borrowdale in good order and assure you they prove extremely good the quality is very Supperior to what we have manufactured in the Country. I beg you _________ of my best thanks for (your) attention in this as well as on many former Occasions. -- This flour is exceedingly fine and we think it supperior to any we have got from you formerly. The bread it produces is very excellent. I am sorry to say that the Lottery concern has not been (next page) very favorable _____out of the Six Shares which I informed you in my last which I had purchased for you they all all turned up Blanks except two Twenty pound prises Nos. 17034 & 17029 which is in the name of your mother and Miss Eliz. Marthas disappointment is very great _____ she has the greatest hopes that you and her would have been fortunate which I wish to God had been the case -- The drawing was just over the day before I received your's which put it out of my power to take a share in your son's name. Permit me to congratulate you in the addition to your Family. I sincerely hope he may be long spared for a Comfort & happiness to you. On the _______ I had the addition of a Daughter to my family and I am happy to inform you that the Mother and her are in a good way. About 10 days ago I had a letter from your Brother dated from Charleston 5th Feby. I am sorry to observe (next page) that he has been unfortunate ___________(in) Collecting his Old Debts. He informs us he at that time could not ____________ for embarking to this Country. ________________ I am extremely sorry for he wish'd me to purchase ___________Ticket in his Name & mine. I____________half tickets and __________________ unfortunate as I am not certain if he is returned to Alexandria. Will not write him at present as I am expecting to hear from him every day -- the Ship Paulina is advertised to sail again to Alexandria about the end of this Month I shall again write you by that opportunity to you Brother. I will be happy (to hear) again from you very soon, your Mother is at present in her usual health -- she and your sisters joins me in kind wishes to you & yours' and I shall only now add I ever am My Dear Sir, Your most sincere friend & Very humble sert.
