Letter to James Patton, Esq., Alexandria, Va., Russell Stevens, Sept. 19, 1810 Submitted for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Debra Miller This collection of letters, bills etc. were sent to James Patton, Esq., Merchant in the old seaport of Alexandria, Va. The letters will encompass the latter 1700s - early 1800s. James Patton was b. ca. 1755 in Newton, Lima-Verry, County Derry, Ireland and he died in Alexandria, Va, date unknown at this time. He married Mollie Kincaid, place and date unknown. His parents were James Patton, Sr. (b. ca. 1734, Ireland, d. Jan. 16, 1821, Pennsylvania) and Mary Newell (b. ca. 1736 Ireland, d. June 7, 1806, Alexandria, Va.). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Compachey 19 September 1810 James Patton Esq Sir I arrived at Tisel (Sisel) the 2nd inst. & was detained on Bo.d for 3 days. I then rec'd a letter from the Captain General offering me 1$ 50/100 a cargo for corn which is nearly s(?) Bushels. If I would not take that (then) I must go to Compechey Immediately. I arrived at Compachy the 7 inst. and got Liberty to Land in 3 days. I am now retailing the corn at 2$ Bushel. I am in hopes to sell all the Corn 10 or 12 days. If no more arrives all the Corn at Market Belongs to Mr. Brce of Baltimore & myself __________are detarmund to Sell Both of the flour(s) Dull at 12$ retail (letter torn away) to carry my flower away But it is Doubtful whether it will be granted. there is no such thing as Selling at Whole Sale here. Corn Retails by the Gallon & half Gallon. It one of the Raskalest that I ever was in. They Purchase Nothing only from hand to mouth. I expect it will be at least 30 days here.
