Letter to James Patton, Esq., Alexandria, Va., Ebenr. Watson, (NY) June 6, 1804 Submitted for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Debra Miller This collection of letters, bills etc. were sent to James Patton, Esq., Merchant in the old seaport of Alexandria, Va. The letters will encompass the latter 1700s - early 1800s. James Patton was b. ca. 1755 in Newton, Lima-Verry, County Derry, Ireland and he died in Alexandria, Va, date unknown at this time. He married Mollie Kincaid, place and date unknown. His parents were James Patton, Sr. (b. ca. 1734, Ireland, d. Jan. 16, 1821, Pennsylvania) and Mary Newell (b. ca. 1736 Ireland, d. June 7, 1806, Alexandria, Va.). New York, June 6th 1804 Gentlemen Annexed is Invoice of EW&Cos shipment pr Galliot President for your account. The price of the half Barrels of mess beef has but just been settled. Enclosed is my bill of disbursements for the Lydia's last voyage, which was omitted in my packet of 1st June. By my last letter to Messrs. L. Lambert & Co which was intended for your perusal also, you will perceive what I feel on the subject of EW&Cos advance to them; I persuade myself you will consider all that I have expressed upon the subject as just and reasonable. What ground exists for any advance at all? I have no property in hand, none even in expectation. I would not make advances upon the Celia under any circumstances till after arrival, much less when it is doubtful whether she has escaped capture, even if she should have arrived safe in the West Indies, and what is still more whether she will come to this port if she should get home safe. No -- I certainly expected that a shipment would be immediately made to me after the house at Alexandria was informed that I was in advance for them, which I presume, from a letter from them of 11th May, they knew at that date -- Let me pray you to urge upon them the propriety of doing this without delay. -- I was much surprised to be presented with a bill from them two days ago for $1,000 @ 30c/s ( I think this was the sight) though I have not yet had advice of it. -- I am, with much esteem Gentl.
