Sir - Will you kindly give me information regarding the services of EDWARD CARSWELL, said to be Captain of Dragoons in the war of 1812; and JOSEPH McCLEANS, whose wife Mrs. ELIZABETH McCLEAN drew a pension. The purpose of this inquiry is to determine my eligibility to membership in the societys of the war of 1812. Very respectfully, ROBERT McCLEAN CARSWELL, P. O. McLEAN aged 57 years, a resident of said City, ....declares, That he is a son of ELIZABETH McLEAN, who, as the widow of JOSEPH McLEAN late of Alexandria Virginia, made application for a pension under act of March 9, 1878. That by the incompleteness of the Marriage Records in the Clerks office of the County Court of Alexandria County in said State, the certificate of Marriage of his father, the said JOSEPH McLEAN, and ELIZABETH REARDON (wife of said JOSEPH), cannot be produced, But a certificate, here Shows that on the 18th of December 1815, his father the Said JOSEPH McLEAN with WILLIAM MANSFIELD as his Surety..... That the Marriage of the Said JOSEPH McLEAN and the Said ELIZABETH REARDON took place in the said City of Alexandria, then in the District of Columbia...... State of Virginia, City of Alexandria } SS On this 6th day of September, AD 1878 personally appeared....MICAHEL B. HARLOW, aged 29 years and JOHN T. HILL, aged 52 years, Residents of this City.... That they were well acquainted with the late JOSEPH McLEAN who died in Said City on the 13th day of January 1874....as friends attended his funeral which took place from the Cathalic Church in Said City, Rev. Father DENNIS O'KANE officiating, That at his death he left a widow ELIZABETH McLEAN who is still surviving & unmarried & who has not remarried since the death of her said husband, They further State that they have no interest direct or indirect in the prosecution of the claim...s/s M.B.HARLOW, J. On this 22d day of March, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and Seventy Eight personally appeared....ELIZABETH McLEAN, aged 80 years, a reside of Alexandria...She further states that the following is a full description of her said husband at the time of his enlistment, viz: age 21 years, cooper by trade, born in St. Mary County, Maryland, dark hair, light complexion. She further states that she was married to the said JOSEPH McLEAN, at the city of Alexandria, in the County of Alexandria, in the Dist of Columbia, on the 25th day of December A.D. 1815 by one Rev FRANCIS NEALE who was a Catholic Priest and that her name before her said marriage was ELIZABETH RIORDEN; and she further states that neither she nor her late husband were previously married....declares that the following have been the places of residence....since the date of his discharge...Alexandria continously except about 2 years in Fairfax Co. Va, her present residence is NWCovnee Dis & Fairfax Sts. Alexa. Va. Marriage Bond dated 18th day of December 1815 states that WILLIAM MANSFIELD was the guardian of ELIZABETH REARDON. ....as is shown by the Family Record which is recorded in "The Holy bible" published in Philadelphia by Eugene Cummisky in 1836, in the handwriting of his mother, Mrs. ELIZABETH McLEAN, widow of JOSEPH, which record is in his Custody, and is as follows, FAMILY RECORD, Married, JOSEPH McLEAN to ELIZABETH RIERDON Dec 25. 1815, JOHN O.
