(Woodstock, Va.) 1865-1974: April 29, 1869 John Richards, Brakeman Killed - We were extremely sorry to learn that Mr. John Richards, from Alexandria, brakeman on the freight train on the 0., A. & M. R. R. fell from the top of a house-car, whilst the train was in motion, near Burke's Station, in Fairfax county, on Friday last, and was run over by the entire train and mashed in a most horrible manner. It appears that no one saw him fall, but when the caboose car came over him the body caught under the brake-bar and caused considerable jarring which induced the conductor, Mr. Suddeth, to look out the rear door, to ascertain the cause of the jumping of the car, when he discovered the body of Richards laying between the railing, both arms cut off and the body crushed and mashed in a most shocking manner. His remains were gathered up in a blanket and sent to his friends in Alexandria.
