He was graduated at the U.S. military academy in 1838, served in the Florida war, became 1st lieutenant in 1839, became captain in 1848, and was dismissed in 1855. He was reappointed, with his former rank, in 1858, but joined the Confederate army in 1861, and was made captain of infantry. He became colonel of the 50th regiment of Virginia infantry in July of the same year, and brigadier-general, 14 Sept., 1863, his brigade being composed of North Carolina and Virginia troops. He went to Egypt after the civil war, received the appointment of brigadier-general in the khedive's army in 1866, and served in the Abyssinian war, but subsequently resigned, and resided in Cairo, Egypt.
