Rowan/Hill Deed, 1854 - Giles Co. VA, Craig Co. VA Giles County, VA, Deed Book K, pg. 356-7. This deed made this 1st day of April in the year 1854 between Stewart Rowan of the one part and Clifton G. Hill of the other part all of the County of Craig and State of Virginia, witnesseth that the said Stewart Rowan doth grant unto the said Clifton G. Hill the following property: 12 feather beds and bedding, 12 bedsteads, 10 tables, 8 washstands, 3 clocks, one bureau, one safe, 2 presses, one writing desk, 3 doz chairs, 8 wash bowls and pitchers, 1 doz night glasses, 6 pair shovel and tongs, one kettle, one cooking stove and fixtures, 5 doz plates and dishes, 6 cooking vessels, one map of the U.S.A., one buggy and harness, one horse waggon, 20 stools, 1 gray horse, 1 sill, 2 horse harnesses, 8 pair andirons, 20 window curtains, 10 matresses, and one thousand pounds of bacon in trust to indemnify Charles L. Rowan Sr., James H. Rowan, and William Boothe securities of a bond executed to John H. Walker by the said Stewart Rowan with the said Charles L. Rowan Sr., James H. Rowan and William Boothe as his securities, for the sum of two hundred dollars bearing date on the 1st day of January 1857 and payable on or before the 1st day of October 1858 with interest from that date. And it is covenant and agreed between the parties that in case of a sale the same shall be made for cash after advertising the time and place thereof and giving at least 14 days notice thereof by notice set up at the front of the Courthouse door of the County in which the property may be, and out of the monies arising from the sale thereof shall first pay the cost of executing this trust and then pay to the said John H. Rowan the debt aforesaid with the interest which may have accrued thereon and the balance if any pay to the said Stewart Rowan his heirs or assigns. But if the said Stewart Rowan shall fully pay off and discharge the said debt with the interest and costs of executing this trust on or before the said 1st day of October 1858 so that his said securities may be released from all liability by their joining him in the said bond then this obligation shall be void else remain in full force and virtue. Witness the following signatures and seals. Stewart Rowan C. G. Hill County of Craig, to wit: I, Allen M. Carper a Justice of the Peace for the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do certify that Stewart Rowan and Clifton G. Hill whose names are signed to the writing above bearing date on this day have acknowledged the same before me in my county aforesaid. Given under my hand the 1st day of April 1854. Allen M. Carper, J.P. Craig County Court Clerks Office April 1st, 1857. This deed was this day exhibited to said office and together with the certificates written thereon was admitted to record. Teste Clifton G. Hill, Clerk Virginia: In the Clerks Office of the County Court of Giles County, the 5th day of April 1858: This deed of trust from Stewart Rowan to Clifton G. Hill, Trustee, to indemnify Charles L. Rowan Sr., James H. Rowan and William Boothe with the certificate of acknowledgement thereto, was this day presented in said office, and admitted to record.
