SUBJECT: The Petty Family Bible 2. LOCATION: In the town of Culpeper, Virginia, at the home of Mrs. C. H. Smith, 605 North Main Street 3. DATE: 1834 4. OWNERS: Mrs. C. H. Smith, Miss Georgie Petty 5. DESCRIPTION: This Bible is in bad condition, one back being torn off and a home made one substituted. Some of the pages are loose also. The book is twelve inches long, about nine inches wide and four inches thick. The back which remains is pasteboard. The book is illustrated with full page pictures and maps and has the usual features, with the apocrypha added. It was published in Boston by Langdon Coffin, 77 Washington Street. 6. LOCATION: At Rosedale which is about 8 miles north of Culpeper, Virginia, .7 mile west of Rixeyville, Virginia, on Route #640, thence north on private road about .1 mile to house. 3. DATE: 1846 4. OWNERS: Misses Fannie R. Lewis, Lula T. Lewis, and Mattie M. Lewis, Culpeper, Virginia 5. DESCRIPTION: This book is about fourteen inches long, eleven inches wide and four inches thick. It is bound with leather covered paste board backs. Inside there are several large illustrations, full page but not in colors. The Apocrypha is included in this book. The condition is very good there being only one or two loose pages. 6. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This Bible is the family Bible of the Rixeys who have been written up in a story about "Mount Pleasant, "Rose Dale," and "Pleasant Hill." It contains beside the regular scriptures, the Apocrypha, tables of texts and passages, tables of kindred and affinity, an analysis of the Old and New Testaments, tables of scripture measures, weights and coins, a table of time and a chronological index of the years and time. It is beautifully illustrated with woodcuts, full page size. The binding is leather, and it was published by Kemper and Sharpless, 93 Market Place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 6.
